As part of the Jubilee celebrations, Open Dawes propose a PHOTO EXHIBITION of “A Day In the Life of Hernhill Parish”, a snapshot of village life in one day, capturing the ordinary, every-day activities of everyone living, working, walking or just passing through the village.
We would like everyone to join in and photograph themselves, their neighbours, the post-man, the workmen, animals, plants, buildings, everyone and anyone, anything and everything, they see in the parish on the day, doing their every-day activities.
If you have a digital camera and are willing to volunteer as an amateur photo-journalist for the day, (or evening) please contact me. If you would like to be included in the project, or have any suggestions of what should be included, but do not have a camera, we can send a volunteer with a camera out to you on the day. We would like to include as many residence of the parish as possible (everyone, ideally!) If you do not have a digital camera, but would like to take your own photos, I do have a scanner and can scan photo prints for inclusion in the project. We will ask for photos to be submitted by 8th May, so that we can display them over the Jubilee weekend. They will then be made permanently available on the hernhill.net website. Have you ever thought of growing your own veg? Do you think you don’t have the space to grow enough in your garden? Or have you finally been told that you can’t dig up any more of the garden as the washing line can’t be used to hold up the bean canes! In all of these cases there is a clear answer – an allotment!
Allotments are an extremely good way to reduce your shopping bills. The community that forms around allotments enables the sharing of knowledge and experience which should encourage anyone new to veg growing to give it a try. The establishment of allotments in the village would be a valuable way of enhancing our community and to increase our green credentials.
As the brave soul who suggested such a scheme and with general support from the Parish Council, I am now in search of anyone in the area who would be interested in an allotment. A traditional allotment is 10 rods (90×30 feet), but they also come in halves. Swale council’s guide to allotment rents put a full plot at £29 a year, £14.50 for concessions and £14.50 for a half plot, £7.23 for concessions. If you are interested in having a plot please do get in touch with me at Hernhill.Allotments@gmail.com , alternatively, drop me a note. One hopes that I’m not alone in my ambitions and once some other like minded individuals come forward, we can discuss the next steps.

It is apparent that a dog is being allowing to foul the pavements along Swale View. Hernhill.net has received several emails from residents about this. This is a route for children walking to school. Can I encourage everyone to be vigilant in clearing up after their dogs please.
The British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) is carrying out a major survey of ‘Heritage Trees’ in Kent with the aid of lottery funding. The five year scheme will involve hundreds of people of all ages in a host of activities focused on Kent’s rich stock of heritage trees.
Heritage trees are defined as old trees, wide trees, rare trees and trees with historical and cultural significance. They can also include comparatively young trees, planted to commemorate an event, or trees with a link to local history or folklore.
I have joined the BTCV volunteer tree surveyors to help record as many these heritage trees as possible and I am looking for local trees of note. If anyone knows of any potential heritage trees that might qualify to be on the record I would be happy to take any details. (The oak tree on the village green has already been recorded.)
If anyone would like more information about the project I would be pleased to pass details.

“Seasons Greetings from New Zealand
The 1851 Census shows John Hudson, with his wife and five childeren were living at Bounds House, Hernhill Road, Henhill. This John Hudson is my wife’s great great grandfather and the family moved to New Zealand in 1857/59. We are trying to find a map showing where Bounds House is or was.
There is a house named ”The Bounds” in Bounds Lane near Boughton Street so would this be the Bounds House shown in the 1851 Census?”
